Asbestos Waste Dumped Near NI School

Fury as Asbestos Dumped Within Metres of Northern Ireland Primary School

A large volume of waste was dumped within metres of Glenwood Primary School in west Belfast. A member of the public raised the alarm after passing some wasteland just off the Shankill Road. Asbestos material was spotted among the other dumped material.

A local Councillor Mr McCoubrey raised concerns that children in the local area could have come into contact with the hazardous material, as they use the area to play in. The council had to use specialist contractors to comb the area and they found documents linking the dumped material to a north Belfast contractor. It is understood that the company may now face prosecution.

The cleanup operation took 2 full days for a specialist asbestos removal company to make the area safe again. Locals who were collecting material for a bonfire in the area were able to assist the PSNI and the NIHE in identifying the culprits. The Councillor reiterated that fly-tipping will not be tolerated and anyone caught will face prosecution.
