Coleraine Property Management Company Fined for Heath & Safety Failings

The Health & Safety Executive NI (HSENI) has led a prosecution against a Coleraine based property management company.

On the 6th of January the company was fined for failings regarding the removal of asbestos during refurbishments at Ballybrakes Business Park in Ballymoney.

The company pleaded guilty and were fined £15000.

HSENI Investigation During Refurbishments

The HSENI investigated after complaints of unsafe practices regarding asbestos exposure. The health & safety inspector served a prohibition notice after discovering that work had commenced without an asbestos survey in place.

Deadly Asbestos Found On Building Site

The HSENI inspectors analysed samples and confirmed that asbestos was present throughout the building. The workers may not have realised they were working around asbestos.

Employers Legal Duty

Employers have a legal duty to manage asbestos. Workers need to be safe at work so an asbestos survey should always be carried out before any building, maintenance or upgrade work is carried out.

The inspector said that the company failed to plan so that work could be carried out safely to minimise the spread of asbestos fibres.

According to the HSENI article, 63 asbestos related deaths occurred in Northern Ireland in 2019 alone.

Always ask for the asbestos register before starting work on a project.
