Belfast Cathedral Quarter Building Asbestos Fears

Belfast Cathedral Quarter Building Asbestos Fears

A Belfast Council officer raised concerns about an application to open a bar and nightclub in Cathedral Quarter. The old building contains asbestos cement roofing which can be dangerous if fibres escape into the air.

Other issues were raised about the application and it was described as a “pop up pub”.

The applicant provided an asbestos report and an additional specialist report detailing that asbestos fibre release was unlikely in the event of loud music being played.

Permission was granted to turn the old warehouse into a venue, hosting live music and DJs. You can read the Belfast Live article here.

Asbestos Risks in Older Buildings

There is no doubt risks in buildings where asbestos is present. In many cases if the asbestos is in good condition and not disturbed it does not pose a great threat. However if it is disturbed it can be lethal.

Asbestos is commonly disturbed by a tradesperson or DIY enthusiast who may not even know it is present. Common mistakes include drilling holes for wires or pipes, sanding surfaces prior to redecoration and other maintenance related tasks.
