Inquiry Into How the Health & Safety Executive Manages Asbestos in Buildings
According to committees UK, The Work and Pensions Committee has launched an investigation into how the Health & Safety Executive manages the continued presence of asbestos in buildings.
Asbestos was banned in 1999 over 20 years ago but it is still the largest single cause of work related death. Asbestos related illness accounts for more than 5000 deaths each year across the UK.
Are Asbestos Regulations Effective?
Following a report into the regulations by Respublica, the committee raised concerns about current policies. The Minister for Employment said that the Health & Safety Executive would review current regulations regarding asbestos management.
The inquiry will look at how the HSE mitigates risks and how our approach compares with other countries. Current risks from asbestos in buildings will be examined as part of the review.
Asbestos Still Devastating Lives 20 Years After Being Banned
Even though asbestos was banned in the UK more than 20 years ago, it still has a devastating impact on those who have been exposed to it.
The UK has the highest death rate from asbestos related illness in the world. The Health & Safety Executive are currently looking at how it can be dealt with more safely and the committee’s inquiry should help our regulations become as safe and effective as possible.
