What Do You Think About When We Say Asbestos?
“I work in a local architects, so I know some things about asbestos. It is dangerous and can cause cancer if the fibers are released into the air. It is now banned and you should never damage any asbestos or attempt to remove it yourself!”
Abbie (19) from Ballymoney, Northern Ireland
Abbie, Can You Tell Me Anything About Asbestos?
“Mmm, I think it’s something up in the attic. It looks like wool and is dangerous I think.”
Laura (46) from Dundonald, Northern Ireland
Do You Know Anything About Mesothelioma and Asbestos?
“Asbestos is a disaster! It can kill you and should never have been used. I think Mesothelioma is the type of cancer you get if you breathe asbestos fibers. I know a plumber who developed this after many years of working at a hospital. I am always careful when builders are demolishing any older buildings as I think fibers could be released into the air. I don’t want to breathe that in!”

Ian, Tell Me About Asbestos?
“Asbestos is a dangerous material that was used in building. I know a colleague who told me about asbestos exposure that occurred in the 60’s in his previous work. He went on to serve with us in the Police but I remember him being medically retired eventually. It takes many years to become apparent and is horrible. I would urge anyone to call in a specialist surveyor.”
Our Verdict
We asked these questions as a test to see what people knew. Generally people seem to know it is dangerous but some answers were extremely vague and so we would urge anyone to take extra care. If you would like our help, we can provide full asbestos surveys of your property. We are a team of fully qualified surveyors and will provide you with a complete report of our findings. Remember if you are unsure if you are dealing with asbestos then assume that it is present.
